Today’s quote comes from Bernard Malamud, author of The Natural. Writing multiple drafts wasn’t a concept I really understood when I first started writing. Once I finished my first novel and realized what a mess that plot was, the idea finally clicked! Now I always write the first draft just for myself, using it to figure out my story.
“I would write a book, or a short story, at least three times – once to understand it, the second time to improve the prose, and a third to compel it to say what it still must say.” – Bernard Malamud
